1889 Books

For some years, Phil Jones has been taking photos in South Yorkshire and posting them to Instagram. This collection of 111 images taken in Sheffield is the first time any of them have been published in book form. The collection is a remarkable portrayal of a city and its people.

 

The skill of the photographer is not in clicking the shutter, it is in observing and understanding the subject. This is a story book: each image telling a story - the odd one or two expanded through words. The collection shows the close relationship Phil develops with those whose images he captures: they are tender and respectful, never with any hint of condescension.
