Jake Pearson

New YA/easy read fantasy adventure

After the war, the world is mean and dispiriting, lacking in meaning and full of vehemence.
The returning “hero,” Francis Wonder, cannot stay. He sets off to find a place with a different kind of currency: wonder. Somewhere he can be at ease.
After travelling the world, he reaches a place to settle and founds his own town, a town that becomes a magnet for the world’s most charmingly eccentric characters.
As the inhabitants of the Town of Wonder settle into their extraordinary lives, a trickster with a magic watch appears, threatening to turn all their fortunes upside down.

"There is a line in Gunter Grass's The Tin Drum that reads: 'Jan had gone off to the eternal realm of card houses and castles in Spain, where men believe in happiness...'
It is this idea of men (or humans, to be more accurate) believing in happiness that I have tried to make the bedrock of the story.

...I wrote this story for my daughter. The idea that growing up in a world so bleak could potentially render her unable to see the wonder in the everyday makes me numb with fear. All I ever really want is to help her believe in magic, and this story is my way of helping to do that"                                                - Jake Pearson
